Are Gay Men Considered More Acceptable On Screen Than Lesbians?

Originally posted on www.biggaypictureshow.com

Gay people have entered the mainstream media significantly in recent times, whether as television or radio presenters or characters in television and film. But something that has to be looked at, is how this representation is mainly of gay men.
When we see gay couples or a singular gay person in a film or on television, it is almost always gay men and very rarely a lesbian or lesbian couple. But why is this? Is the media and society in general more accepting of gay men that it is of gay women?
In recent times gay men have been shown in a particular light – we all know the stereotype of the fashion conscious, confident, out going, opinionated gay man who regularly springs up in TV programmes and films. When partnered with a straight woman, this coupling looks like a sure fire hit – just look at Carrie and Stanford in Sex and the City.
This cool trendy image of the gay man has also seeped into public consciousness as well, because as a gay man, how often have you bumped into someone on a night out or just with friends and heard the phrase, “I’ve always wanted a gay friend.” However you never hear someone say the same about having a lesbian friend, maybe because some people still have the image that lesbians are Dr Martins wearing, radical feminists in dungarees and checked shirts. It’s a stereotype that I can’t say I’ve actually come across in real life, and there aren’t many, if any, straight man and gay woman or straight woman and gay woman pairings in our regularly viewed entertainment.
But why is this? Is it because of the image that has been broadcast everywhere of gay men and the use of celebrities such as Graham Norton, Alan Carr and Gok Wan that have made gay men much more accessible and fashionable than women? We do have lesbian television presenters such as Sue Perkins, but let’s be honest, her time on television can’t really be compared to the constant presence of her gay male counterparts.
When it comes to gay men on television and film, there isn’t as much representation as there could be, especially in film, where lead gay characters are few and far between, but there are still significantly more gay men than there are lesbians.
Programmes such as Queer as Folk and Will & Grace helped bring gay men into the mainstream media and they have become staples ever since, but if Will was straight and Grace was a lesbian, would the programme have been as big as it was? The answer is probably no, because the stereotype conveyed in society of a gay man seems to add more comic value than that of a lesbian.
This continues throughout television where gay couples on British TV in Eastenders and Coronation Street have been major successes and have been given many major storylines (there have been lesbian storylines, but beyond the girl-on-girl kiss in Brookside, haven’t seeped into cultural consciousness in the same way). In film, Brokeback Mountain was a major Hollywood success both financially and personally for gay men, as they hadn’t had that type of exposure in a Hollywood movie ever, but there hasn’t been a major mainstream film based around lesbians.
Ok, there was The Kids are Alright in terms of movie representation, and there have been hit shows in the form of The L Word and Lip Service, but the majority of viewers for these programmes seem to be lesbians or people who already back the LGBT community, whereas programmes like Queer as Folk became a surprise hit with a large number of diverse viewers. The character of Sophie Webster has also played one of the bigger characters in Coronation Street recently, and being a lesbian the character is one of the most high profile in terms of lesbian representation, but why did it take them so long to introduce a lesbian character when they’d already had a few major gay themed storylines at that point?
We may never know the real answer, but hopefully the representation and acceptance of gay females on television and in film will improve, in the same way that it did for gay men. Sue Perkins is currently writing a new sitcom for BBC2 concentrating on a lesbian vet. How well it will do is another matter. But with representation increasing, hopefully we will see gay women and men on our television screens in a bigger quantity and more regularly. Who knows, the next big gay film in Hollywood may just centre around a lesbian. Here’s hoping.

Are we grinding differently?

Originally posted on www.sexandtherecession.co.uk
Since the recession hit back in late 2008 everyone in the country has been tightening those purse strings and holding on to their money tighter than ever.
This however hasn’t come without its setbacks. With people now limiting their expenditure on luxuries such as new clothes, shoes and dining out they have almost become a thing of the past for many people, even everyone’s Saturday nights out have become a victim of the recession and in turn so have their sex lives.
With casual sex no longer being a taboo, in facts it’s far from it with most friendship groups discussing it in the hope they sound oh so Sex and the City, a Saturday night out is where thousands of people around the country get their rocks off with the nearest person on the dance floor. However with these nights out being cut back on considerably, many people who once enjoyed a carefree casual sex life have seen it dwindle dramatically.
Gay men in particular have often been considered as having extremely care free and casual sex lives and in the wake of the recession, with the fear of cut backs on nights out arising, a new creation for the smartphone generation emerged … Grindr.
Grindr is a geosocial-networking app that gay and bisexual men can use to find other gay and bisexual men in a close proximity, in other words they can use it to find the closest quickie. That’s right,Grindr has helped cut out the middle man, in this case the middle man being the club and the alcohol, and has allowed gay men the world over to access sex at the click of a button.
So Grindr has seemingly emerged to save the sex lives of gay men everywhere, after all there are now over two million people using it in 192 across the globe. So even though the recession has hit and people are suffering and cutting back on luxuries, thanks to a free app for most smartphones, the iPod and iPad gay men can still enjoy the free pleasure that is sex.
Many people I know have used this app and continue to use it everyday and their reasons for doing it? It’s quick, easy and best of all free, showing us that the recession has not only hit our bank balances and sex lives, it has also changed the way we approach sex and dating.
There isn’t a version for straight people yet, but with the popularity of Grindr and the way it’s expanding around the world, along with the never ending recession and cut backs and not forgetting our newly developed approaches to dating, it won't be long before everyone is grinding in a completely different way.

James Franco For Child of God

News is circulating that James Franco will be adapting the novel Child of God.
The star will be making the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel after his attempts to adapt McCarthy’s other novel Blood Meridian have seemingly hit a wall.
Child of God is a novel/film about a backwoodsman called Ballard who decides to live outside of society in a cave situated in the East Tennessee hills after being released from prison. He also decides to experiment with a little bit of necrophilia whilst he’s there. Nothing too strange then.
It isn’t clear at the moment what happened with Blood Meridian, as the film already had a producer in the form of Scott Rudin and twenty minutes of footage with Scott Glenn and Luke Perry. All that is known is that Franco has said it’s ‘on hold for now’ so it may never come to fruition in other words.
There are no further details regarding Child of God at the moment, so you will have to stay tuned for that one. But I’m guessing it may go the same way as Blood Meridian.

Lion King 3D  Tops Box Office

The house of mouse has shown its huge power once again, as The Lion King 3D soars to the top of the American box office.
The film took an incredible $29.3 million at the box office over the weekend, showing that there are still a lot of people out there with a soft spot for samba and his animated friends.
The film pushed last week’s number one Contagion down to the number two position, as it took a still impressive $14.4 million over the weekend. Coming in third was Ryan Gosling’s latest effort Drive, which took $11 million this weekend. A slightly disappointing return considering it was given quite a lot of praise from the critics, but cinemagoers had other ideas this weekend.
Coming in fourth, and slowly slipping away from the top of the box office after several weeks there was The Help, which took in $6.4 million. And coming in fifth was the reboot of Straw Dogs, which only managed to pull in $5 million.
Possibly one of the biggest disappointments was Sarah Jessica Parker’s latest effort I Don’t Know How She Does It, which only managed $4.5 million. SJP seriously needs a new Sex and the City film if she wants to up her box office cred again.

Silk To Be Remade

Taiwanese Film Silk is to be made remade for western audiences.
With remakes being big at the moment, and with Hollywood apparently having no originality about them it looks as though they have turned to foreign cinema once again to help them get a big hit.
Gold Circle Films have hired hired Marco King, Mary King and Jonathan Watters to remake the chilling tale of a dead child and seemingly barmy scientist.
The original movie, that was made in 2006 and was directed by Chao-Bin Su, and found a crippled scientist using his latest invention to capture the essence of a ghost child, who may also be a little bit vengeful. After discovering that the child was killed by his mother and buried at a nuclear power plant things start to go seriously wrong for everyone involved.
So far no details have been released as everyone is staying tight lipped about this movie, but to be honest it does sound quite exciting. Lets just hope they do it justice in the remake.

Sex and the City 3

To all you Sex and the City fans out there who are hoping for a third instalment of Carrie and the girls, it looks like there could be hope.

Apparently there’s even a script for the film. When Sarah Jessica Parker showed up for an interview for her latest film I Don’t Know How She Does It she was presented with a ‘leaked’ page from the screenplay for Sex and the City 3.
The star was then made to read from the script page with Greg Kinnear by MTV’s Josh Horowitz.
Although there has been no confirmation from any of the stars of the movie or any one else involved with the series or first two movies I’m guessing that this may not happen, mainly due to the flack that Sex and the City 2 received.
However with there of the four main stars not really doing much, and the enormous fan base the show ahs around the world it could still make a large profit at the box office, so it just may happen.
But if it does they’ll have to do it soon, I mean the girls aren’t getting any younger are they.

Cotillard for Rust and Bone

Marion Cotillard is set to star in the new Jacques Audiard movie Rust and Bone.

After his film making success with the 2009 prison drama A Prophet, Audiard and his writing partner Thomas Bidegain have decided to base their latest screenplay on a short story collection by Craig Davidson.
The type of stories within Rust and Bone and set in a world of fighting dogs, prize fighters, sex addicts and gamblers, sounds dangerous but exciting doesn’t it.
The titular story in books, which I’m assuming will be the focal point of the film, focuses on a boxer who has to lean towards less legal fights due to the broken bones in his fingers.
There is currently no word yet about which tales will be adapted for the movie.
Also stepping up to star in the picture will be Celine Sallettte and Bouli Lanners.
Filming for the movie will begin in the next few months for 14 weeks in France and Belgium.

Eastwood to Unveil J. Edgar

Legendary Hollywood actor and director is to debut his new movie J. Edgar at the AFI festival.
The 25th annual AFI film festival will begin on November 3rd and the new film from the Academy Award winner will be premiered on the opening night.
The movie will see Leonardo Di Caprio portray the controversial FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.
Also staring alongside him will be Naomi Watts, Judi Dench and Armie Hammer.
With such a big star director and a cast of such talented actors, this film has all the makings for a brilliant piece of cinema.
After skipping other festivals such as Tornto, Venice and New York, it looks like this film will be the talk of the town very soon as any film by Clint Eastwood always gains a lot of attention, especially after such great film’s as Million Dollar Baby.
The film will be opening in selected theatres then on November 9th before going worldwide two days later.

Bridesmaids becomes the highest grossing R-rated female comedy

Despite its modest budget and a lack of A-list stars Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids has become the top R-rated female comedy ever.
The film, which is produced by Judd Apatow has become a constant stable on the box office charts since its release in May.
Since its release the film has amassed a domestic tally of $152.9 million, helping it to knock style queen Sarah Jessica Parker and her group of middle aged career girls off the top spot, which they previously held with Sex and the City, since its release in 2008.
Not a bad feat considering the millions of Sex and the City fans there are around the world.
The film has also become the highest grossing entry in American producer, director and screenwriter Judd Apatow’s library.
The film was written by star Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo and has appeared to have captured the hearts and tickled the funny bones of an incredibly sizeable audience. Along with the help of the films director Feig and the remainder of the cast that includes Maya Rudolph, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd, Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids has cemented its status of the one of the funniest and must see films of the year.

James Purefoy discusses John carter

British actor James Purefoy has spoken out about his involvement with sci-fi film John Carter.
Purefoy, who is known to audiences for his roles in Solomon Kane and for portraying Mark Antony in TV hit Rome, plays Kantos Kan, the captain of a futuristic airship in the film, which is set for release in 2012.
The actor said of the character, “he’s a very cheeky, mischievous solider/airman,” before adding, “he’s just very charming, he’s not frightened of getting involved in very sticky situations with John Carter.”
The film follows the titular human character, John Carter, who finds himself caught up in the middle of a Martian battle after he is transported to Mars.
Purefoy later added that John Carter is being set up as the first in a series of movies, which will allow his character more screen time in the future projects.
He said, “He’s not in this film very much.” He then added, “I think a lot of the characters in the first John Carter are established, but with the knowledge that they’re going to be bigger in the next two episodes of it.”
The film John Carter opens next year on March 9th.
